Courtship Game Called Saba

16 Apr

I am in Phra Pradaeng in Samut Prakan for their cultural activities for Songkran 2010. The people here are of Mon descent and they celebrate Songkran, the traditional new year, after the rest of the country.

I went to watch local people play Saba in the grounds of the local fort. This is a kind of a courtship game played between young women and men of the village. This was one way they could get to know each other with the approval of their parents.

It seems a complicated game, almost random at times. They basically have a small disc, which they hold between their toes, and then they try and flick the disc to knock over the disc of their opponent.

You can go and see the Saba game over this weekend in Phra Pradaeng. I will write about this game in more details when I get home over at my main blog www.thai-blogs.com.
