Mangrove Conservation Center

05 Jun

While I was planning my trip to Chonburi, I studied satellite images of the area around the city. Along the coastline I came across a patch of mangrove forest and what looked like a boardwalk.

The only way that I could drive to the Mangrove Forest Conservation and Study Center was with the help of Google Earth on my iPhone. There were no signs at all and it was off the main road. I had marked my google map with a pin for the mangrove forest. Then I just followed the blue dot which marked my position on the map as I got closer and closer.

When I arrived there was hardly anyone there at all. There was an information center with a map which showed me that the boardwalk took a circular route covering a distance of 2,300 meters. Some of it was out in the open and was very hot. But, I was thankful that much of the 50 minute walk was in the shade.

I saw quite a bit of wildlife despite being in the middle of the day. Most prominent were the lung fish that came up out of the muddy water every now and then for some air. There was also a lot of crabs and a large variety of birds. It was good not to hear any sounds of the city and just have the natural sounds of the mangrove forest.
