Monkeys on Khao Sam Muk

05 Jun

Between Ang Sila and Bangsaen Beach there is a small hill called Khao Sam Muk. According to legend, two lovers jumped to their death from here when their parents objected to their marriage. There is a shrine for them at the foot of the hill. Click here to see the location on a map.

The reason most people come to this hill these days is for the monkeys. Hundreds of them and they are very naughty. I stopped to take this picture and then as I drove off I suddenly realized that I had a stowaway on top of my car! He eventually jumped off my but left dirty footprints everywhere.

There are several places around the hill where there are vendors selling food for the monkeys. They are naughty but not really that aggressive. The ones in Lopburi will snatch any bag that you are carrying. However, I was cautious taking pictures with my iPhone in case one of them grabbed it and ran off!

I met monkeys like these in South Africa before. They were much bigger than these. I guess they are different breed.
