Welcome to Buddhist Hell

05 Jun

There are quite a few temples around Thailand that have depictions of what will happen to you in Hell if you break the precepts or do something bad. One of the most comprehensive collections can be found at Wang Saen Suk not far from Bangsaen Beach. Click here for location on a map.

Some of the scenes are pretty gruesome and not really rated PG. However, parents seem keen on bringing their children here so that they can learn what will happen to them if they do something bad. The person in this scene was caught stealing.

The woman in this scene had an abortion and is being punished in Hell for terminating a life. As you walk around you will see that there are signs in English and Thai describing the crime of each person.

If you commit adultery, you will be punished by being forced to climb a thorny tree while being poked with spears. There are also scenes showing what will happen to you if you don’t give alms to the monks or tell lies and even if you hit your parents.

You can reach the temple by going down Sai 2 which runs parallel to the beach road. Then look for Soi 19 on your left. The temple is at the end of the road. The Buddha Park is open every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

My wife (at that time my girlfriend) took me here many years ago. It was off the farang tourist trail.

These photos unnerve me to no end. I cannot believe that Thailand has an actual park such as this. Do they get real enjoyment out of visiting it?
