Prasat Preah Vihear

13 Aug

Prasat Preah Vihear is a Khmer temple at the top of a 525 meter high cliff on the border of Thailand and Cambodia. It is not easy to visit at the moment. In fact it is very dangerous as some of the land is in dispute even though, in 1962, the International Court of Justice gave the ownership of the temple to Cambodia.

Although you cannot visit the real place at the moment, you can go and see this replica at Ancient Siam in Samut Prakan Province. It is situated in the the flat plains surrounding Bangkok and so the owners of the open air museum had to also construct an artificial hill.

It is a hard climb to the top but the views of the park and the surrounding rice fields are really worth it. In the distance you can even see the skyscrapers in Bangkok. Looking the opposite direction you can see the Gulf of Thailand. So, if you don’t want to face down the barrel of a gun, then come here!
