World Gourmet Festival 2010 in Bangkok

06 Sep

This evening I was lucky to get an invite to attend the 11th World Gourmet Festival at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok. Award winning master chefs from all around the world were flown in to Bangkok to cook especially for this event. For our meal, we were honoured to have Anthony Demetre from the UK. Most night there will be different chefs. The festivals runs from today until 12th September 2010.

Chilled Organic Carrot Soup with pink grapefruit, gordal olives and hazelnuts.

Pig’s Head with Onion Marmalade

Squid and Mackerel Burger

Slow Roasted Rack of Limousin Veal

Classic English Egg Custard Tart with preserved apricots and pine nuts

For each course we were served with different wine. Starting with the first course we had: Possessione Bianco, Masi Serego Alighieri, 2008; Riesling “Julius”, Henschke, 2003; Merlot “Founder’s Estate”, Beringer, 2006; Shiraz Cabernet “Koonunga Hill”, Penfolds, 2006; and Viognier, Sauvignon, Muscato, Late Harvest, Anakena, 2007.

It was a wonderfully delicious meal in a grand setting with enjoyable company. I was supposed to be going out to have a 25 baht pad thai this evening as part of my 30-day Thai Street Food Challenge.  Hopefully no-one noticed that I went to a 5,000 baht a head meal instead!

Distribution of Rice to the Poor

05 Sep

Early this morning I went to San Jao Pho Tap. This is a famous Chinese shrine  in Samrong Tai District of Samut Prakan Province.

They were having their annual “ting krachaat” event for local poor people. This basically involves giving out free food to anyone who wants it. Many Chinese temples do it at this time of year.

At San Jao Pho Tap they also had thousands of bags of rice to give out to the poor. So, after a free breakfast they all lined up for bags of rice.
