It will soon be time for Loy Krathong Festival which is one of the most beautiful festivals celebrated in Thailand. To take part in this event, Thai people make a small float shaped like a bowl. Traditionally this is made from the stem of a banana tree and also from the banana leaves. In Thai this is called a “krathong“. This is then floated on the water (loy) while asking for a blessing and making a wish at the same time.

In these pictures, students from Sriwittayapaknam School are learning how to make a traditional style krathong made from banana leaves. This is better than the foam krathongs that you sometimes see. Really you don’t have to make one yourself as you can easily buy krathongs on the night. But these students are doing this during their handicraft lesson at school.

As you can see, the stem of the banana plant has been cut so that it forms the base of the krathong. Then strips of banana plant leaves are cut up and then carefully folded to make a beautiful pattern around the edge of the krathong. It will take them a couple of hours to finish I think. Maybe better to buy one for 30 baht down by the river on the night!
