Thai Signs: No Parking on Even Days

20 Jun
P965

At first you might think that this is a “no parking” sign. But the words below tell you that you cannot park on certain days. In this case there is no parking on even numbered days. If, for example, it is the 3rd, then you can park. The first word is “haam” which means “forbidden”. Next is “jot” which is “to park” and then finally “wan koo” which is “even numbered days”. The opposite is “wan kee”.

Thai Dessert: Khanom Jaak

19 Jun

This is a popular dessert in my province. The ingredients are basically sticky rice flour, palm sugar and shredded coconut meat. This mixture is wrapped in nipa palm leaves (called jaak in Thai) and then grilled on a charcoal fire.

Thai Signs: For Rent

18 Jun
P913

This is a sign that you often see on a shop-front where the shutters are pulled down. It says “hai chao” which translates as “for rent”. It can also mean “to lease”. Sometimes the sign will say “sale/rent” and I will bring you that one as soon as I spot it!

Thai Dessert: Khanom Krok

One of my favourite street food snacks has to be khanom krok (ขนมครก). This can be loosely translated into English as Coconut Pudding. It is basically a mixture of flour batter and coconut cream cooked in a pan over a charcoal fire.

Stir-fried Pork with Thai holy basil – 30 Baht

This dish is one of my favourites which I had for breakfast today. It is Pad Gra Pao Gai Kai Dao (ผัดกะเพาหมูไข่ดาว) which is stir-fried minced pork with holy basil. The fried egg is optional but worth it. This was 30 Baht at Ayutthaya Prison.

Som Tam with Sweetcorn & Salted Egg – 40 Baht

16 Jun

P816

This is another of those interesting variations of Som Tam, the famous Thai spicy salad. Instead of green papaya this one has sweetcorn. I’ve had that version before elsewhere but this one also had salted egg which I wasn’t too thrilled about. The name in Thai is “som tam khao pod kai khem” and I bought it for 40 Baht at a Big C foodcourt.

Thai Dessert: Khanom Chan

16 Jun

P804

This dessert is a favourite of mine and is called Khanom Chan (ขนมชั้น) which is Layered Dessert. It cost 20 baht. As you can see, it comes in layers with varying shades of colours. Normally it is green from the pandanus leaf. But as you can see here they have used other colours as well.

Thai Signs: No Smoking

14 Jun
P788

This is another one of those signs that could save you money. In this case 2,000 Baht. There are a number of places in Thailand where you are not allowed to smoke. This sign says “haam soop bu ree” which literally means “forbidden to smoke”. The first part of “haam” is worth memorising as it is often seen on signs where you are prohibited to do something.
